Fascism means Democracy and vice versa ???

The proposed education reform (known as the Gelmini Law, after the current Education Minister) is provoking enormous reaction from students, parents and teachers and many schools and universities have been occupied by protesters in recent days. Two days ago, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi threatened to restore order by sending in the police (which he subsequently denied, despite documentary evidence). The following interview from yesterday's "Quotidiano nazionale" with former Italian President, Francesco Cossiga, is a good indicator of the current mood in the country.

President Cossiga, do you think that Berlusconi has gone too far in threatening the use of State force against the students?

That depends, if he believes he is the Prime Minister of a strong State then no, he was right. But as Italy is a weak State, as the opposition is no longer the rock-like Italian Communist Party but the evanescent Democratic Party, I'm afraid that his words will not be followed by action and that Berlusconi will just end up with egg on his face.

What should happen now?

At this point, Maroni (Roberto Maroni, current Home Minister) should do what I did when I was Home Secretary.

What's that?

Firstly, forget the high-school students... can you imagine what would happen if a 10-year-old kid got killed or seriously injured...

Instead, the university students?

Let them get on with it. Withdraw the police from the streets and the universities, infiltrate the movement with agents provocateurs ready for anything, and allow the demonstrators to run loose for a week or so, devastating shops, setting cars on fire and causing havoc in the streets.

Then what?

Then, with public opinion on your side, the sound of ambulance sirens should drown out the sirens of police and carabinieri cars.

In the sense that...

In the sense that the forces of law and order should massacre the demonstrators without pity and send them all to hospital. Not arrest them - the magistrates would set them free straight away in any event... beat them bloody and beat the teachers storring them up bloody too.

The teachers, too?

The teacher above all. Not the older ones, of course... the young girls. Have you any idea of the seriousness of what's happening? There are teachers indoctrinating children and encouraging them to demonstrate - that's criminal behavior!

But you realise what they would say in Europe after something like you suggest? "Fascism returns to Italy", they'd say.

Rubbish, it's the democratic way - put out the flame before the fire spreads.

What fire?

I'm not exaggerating when I say I truly believe that terrorism will return to bloody the streets of this country. And I wouldn't want people to forget that the Red Brigades (BR) were not born in the factories but in the universities. And that the slogans they used were used before them by the Student Movement and the trade union left.

So you think it is possible that history will repeat itself?

It's not possible, it's probable. That's why I'm saying: let's not forget that the BR were born because the flame was not put out in time.

Veltroni's PD is on the side of the demonstrators.

Look, I can't in all honesty see Veltroni taking to the streets and risk getting a cracked skull. You're more likely to see him in some exclusive club in Chicago, applauding Obama.

He won't take to the streets with a stick in his hands, sure, but politically...

Politically, he's making the same mistake that the Italian Communist Party made when the troubles (the "contestazione", a widespread progressive protest movement which began in the late 1960s) started: it backed the movement, deluding itself that it could control it, but when it too became a target, as was bound to happen, it soon changed its mind. The so-called hard-line adopted by Andreotti, Zaccagnini and me was suggested by Berlinguer (Leader of the Italian Communist Party from 1972 to 1984).... But today we've got the Democratic Party, an ectoplasm led by another ectoplasm. And that's another good reason for Berlusconi to be more prudent.

Why a free market society wiil never work.

And neither will a communist one.

How many people do you know? And I'm not talking about the number of friends on facebook, how many people do you know? How many people to you care about? How many people could ask you for a favour? How many people could you just stop and chat with? How many people wellbeing are you concerned about? Think about it for a moment. Got a number? Good. Write it down.
Now for a tangent.
Monkeys and apes live in social groups (for the most part), and different species have differently sized communities. Monkeys and apes also have neocortexes (new brank), and if you chop up enough monkey brains and look at enough monkeys in the wild, you find that the size of the social group is a direct function of neocortex size. A Liverpudlian called Robin Ian MacDonald Dunbar came to realise all this and being then decided to take a look at the human neocortex. He then worked out that the average ''number of individuals with whom a stable inter-personal relationship can be maintained'' is about 150. This is Dunbars number.
Now look at your number. How close were you? Does the whole thing make sense? If not, think about how many people are on your course. Now think about how cohesive it is. Still not convinced? Try and think of a group of more than 150 people and think about how well it stays together. When Dunbar looked at 21 hunter gather villages he found that the average population size was 148.4. When psychologist Dennis Fox studied the tragedy of the commons he concluded that ''the upper limit for a simple, self-contained, sustaining, well-functioning commons may be as low as 10 people''. The Roman army considered 150 to be the maximum size of a fighting unit. Wilbert Gore (inventor of Gore-Tex) adamantly stated that a company plant should never have more than 150 people working there because ''we found again and again that things get clumsy at a hundred and fifty''. 150 is the magic number.

Living free, smiling wide

''But'' you interject, ''what the hell does any of this matter?'' It matters because we live in and function in groups of much larger than 150 and the only way that we can do that is by creating rules and laws. 150 people can live in harmonious, libertarian or socialist, anarchy, any more than that and you need structure.
The society we live in is a patchwork quilt of interconnected groups of 150. To make the whole shebang work we need governance and rights and the like keeping a sense of uniformity, to make sure we treat others like we want to be treated. So we set up laws and rules as we all lived in a Dunbar Group (150 people) and then apply them to everyone, so that we act to strangers as if they're people we empathize with.
The problem is, it doesn't work. Dunbar's number is why we don't feel bad stealing from corporations but why we don't steal from our friends. It's why people spend more on pets than charities. It's why we find it hard to worry about ''the planet'' or ''the rainforest'' in the same way we worry about our parents. Simply pretending that people can act towards strangers in the same way that they act towards their Dunbar Group is crazy.
When we construct an economic system, it doesn't make biological sense. Humans aren't naturally communist or capitalist: we're all anarchists at heart. If you take a group of 150 people and let them form their own nation, it looks nothing like the sort of word we live in. There aren't any formal titles. Property balances neatly with sharing. Hierarchies form based on personality and competence. Crime is dealt with by the people. Money usually becomes totally irrelevant. When humans exist in a natural state, life is much simpler.
Every economic principle is manufactured. None are ''right'' - they're just tools to try and make our ''supersocieties'' more like the mini ones we're supposed to live in. The free market world cannot exist. Communist states don't work. What we always end up using is some kind of mixture of ideas. The combination of free markets and government control is the only way to simulate the social groups that we used to live in, and so it will thrive. We need to balance freedom and order.
So the next time someone tries to sell you some economic ideology, take it with a cup of salt.

Χλιδή, Xρήμα και Mπόλικη Διαπλοκή

Εχουν δικαίωμα οι πολιτικοί να συναναστρέφονται με το μεγάλο κεφάλαιο; Φυσικά και έχουν, ειδικά μάλιστα όταν αυτό γίνεται σε ένα από τα ωραιότερα σπίτια της Μεσογείου, κάτω από το οποίο έχει δέσει το κότερο του πλουσιότερου ανθρώπου της Ρωσίας. Πρόβλημα δημιουργείται από το είδος και τη φύση των συζητήσεών τους.

Τα πρόσωπα της σημερινής ιστορίας μας λοιπόν είναι τα εξής:

Peter Mandelson

Ο νέος υπουργός της κυβέρνησης Brown έχει βεβαρημένο παρελθόν ως προς τις σχέσεις του με το μεγάλο κεφάλαιο. Παραιτήθηκε από την πρώτη κυβέρνηση Blair όταν έγινε γνωστό ότι είχε πάρει άτοκο δάνειο από επιχειρηματία χωρίς να το δηλώσει ως όφειλε. Οταν επανήλθε στην κυβέρνηση, εξαναγκάστηκε σε δεύτερη παραίτηση επειδή βοήθησε έναν ινδό επιχειρηματία με δραστηριότητα στη Βρετανία να αποκτήσει βρετανικό διαβατήριο. Περισσότερο γνωστός για τις ικανότητές του να δρα αποτελεσματικά από το παρασκήνιο («spin doctor» του Blair όσο ήταν στην αντιπολίτευση και τα πρώτα χρόνια της κυβέρνησής του), ο Mandelson είναι μια αμφιλεγόμενη όσο και χαρισματική προσωπικότητα, σύμφωνα με όσους τον ξέρουν καλά.

George Osborne

Γόνος της οικογένειας που κατασκευάζει υφάσματα επιπλώσεων και ταπετσαρίες (Osborne & Little), μεγάλωσε με την άνεση που του προσέφερε η κοινωνική του τάξη, σπούδασε στην Οξφόρδη μαζί με τον Rothschild και το 2001 ήταν ο νεότερος σε ηλικία βουλευτής του Συντηρητικού Κόμματος. Δεξί χέρι σήμερα του Cameron, πρωτοστατεί στις επιθέσεις κατά του Brown για τον χειρισμό της οικονομίας, αλλά θα πρέπει τώρα να μετριάσει τους τόνους αφού τα φτερά του τσουρουφλίστηκαν με την ιστορία της Κέρκυρας (είναι η ιστορία που θα ακολουθήσει παρακάτω). Θα έχει σημαίνοντα ρόλο στην προεκλογική εκστρατεία εφόσον σε αυτήν θα κυριαρχήσει το ζήτημα της οικονομίας.

Nat Rothschild

Μοναχογιός του λόρδου Jacob Rothschild, αλήτεψε αρκετά όταν αποφοίτησε από το πανεπιστήμιο, για να σοβαρευθεί στη συνέχεια και να ανοίξει τα δικά του φτερά στον κόσμο των επενδύσεων. Το επενδυτικό κεφάλαιο που έχει δημιουργήσει μαζί με τον Καναδό Timothy Barakett ήταν εξαιρετικά αποδοτικό ως την πρόσφατη κρίση. Γιαγιά του ήταν η Barbara Hutchinson, μετέπειτα σύζυγος του Νίκου Χατζηκυριάκου-Γκίκα, ο οποίος περνούσε ένα μεγάλο μέρος της ζωής του σε μία από τις πέντε ιδιοκτησίες που έχουν οι Rothschild στην Κέρκυρα. Η οικογένειά του έχει παράδοση στη στήριξη πολιτικών. Και δεν αναφερόμαστε μόνο στη χρηματοδότηση του Wellington για να φέρει εις πέρας τους πολέμους κατά του Napoleon αλλά και σε πιο πρόσφατα περιστατικά: όταν ο John McCain βρέθηκε στο Λονδίνου για να συγκεντρώσει χρήματα για την προεκλογική εκστρατεία του, το σχετικό δείπνο φιλοξενήθηκε στο ιστορικό Spencer House του Λονδίνου, που ανήκε κάποτε στην οικογένεια της Princess Diana, αλλά έχει περάσει σήμερα στα χέρια των Rothschild.

Oleg Deripaska

Ο ρώσος μεγιστάνας είναι ένα τυπικό προϊόν του ανεξέλεγκτου πλουτισμού που ξεκίνησε επί προεδρίας Boris Yeltsin με την ιδιωτικοποίηση των κρατικών εταιρειών και το μοίρασμά τους σε ημετέρους και υμετέρους. Η περιουσία του πριν από την τωρινή κρίση υπολογίζεται σε 28 δισ. δολάρια και το «Forbes» τον κατατάσσει στην ένατη θέση με τους πλουσιότερους ανθρώπους στον κόσμο. Από αυτόν περνά το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της παραγωγής αλουμινίου στον κόσμο και ανήκει στον στενό κύκλο των ανθρώπων που στηρίζουν τον Vladimir Putin. Εχει όλα τα καλά του κόσμου, εκτός από ένα: δεν μπορεί να ταξιδέψει στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, αφού οι αμερικανικές αρχές τού έχουν απαγορεύσει την είσοδο ώσπου να διαλευκάνουν αν πράγματι εμπλέκεται στο ξέπλυμα βρώμικου χρήματος.

Το νέο σκάνδαλο που απασχολεί τη βρετανική πολιτική ζωή εστιάζεται στα γεγονότα που συνέβησαν το προτελευταίο Σαββατοκύριακο του εφετινού Αυγούστου μέσα σε ένα πανέμορφο σκηνικό: το σπίτι των Rothschild στην Κέρκυρα, κοντά στον Αγιο Στέφανο, που έχει συνδεθεί με τη ζωή και το έργο του μεγάλου ζωγράφου Νίκου Χατζηκυριάκου-Γκίκα. Σε αυτό το σπίτι ήταν καλεσμένοι ο Mandelson, επίτροπος τότε της Βρετανίας στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ενωση και από τους στενότερους συνεργάτες (κάποτε...) του Toni Blair, και ο George Osborne, σίγουρος υπουργός Οικονομικών σε μια ενδεχόμενη κυβέρνηση Cameron. Οικοδεσπότης ο Nathaniel Rothschild, ο νεαρός γόνος της ιστορικής οικογενείας και συμφοιτητής του Osborne στην Οξφόρδη.

Κάτω από το σπίτι είχε «δέσει» με το κότερό του - το «Queen Κ», μήκους 70 μέτρων και αξίας 100 εκατ. ευρώ - ο Oleg Deripaska, ο ρώσος «βασιλιάς του αλουμινίου», ο οποίος, παρά τα προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζει με την παρούσα κρίση, είναι ο σημαντικότερος από τους λεγόμενους «ολιγάρχες» της σημερινής Ρωσίας (ο Abramovich δεν μετράει γιατί δεν έχει ως βάση του τη Ρωσία) και παραμένει μια άκρως υπολογίσιμη δύναμη στο πολιτικοοικονομικό κατεστημένο της σημερινής Ρωσίας. Αυτό που συνδέει τον Nathaniel Rothschild με τον Deripaska είναι φυσικά το χρήμα, αφού ο νεαρός επενδυτής συμβουλεύει τον ρώσο μεγιστάνα μέσω της εταιρείας του Atticus Capital, που έχει πολλά συμφέροντα στη Ρωσία. Ας σημειώσουμε εδώ ότι ο Nathaniel Rothschild, ένα πρώην κακομαθημένο «παλιόπαιδο» της Οξφόρδης, έχει εξελιχθεί σε σημαντικό παράγοντα του χώρου των επενδύσεων συνδυάζοντας το κοφτερό μυαλό του με τις γνωριμίες και την παράδοση της οικογενείας του.

Το πρόβλημα δημιουργήθηκε σχεδόν ταυτόχρονα με την υπουργοποίηση του Mandelson στον τελευταίο ανασχηματισμό της κυβέρνησης Brown. Ο βρετανός πρωθυπουργός έφερε πίσω τον Mandelson από τις Βρυξέλλες αναθέτοντάς του τον τομέα της επιχειρηματικότητας και των επενδύσεων. Σχεδόν ταυτόχρονα οι «Times» έγραψαν ότι ο Mandelson συναντήθηκε με τον Deripaska πάνω στο κότερο, πράγμα που δεν είναι καθόλου επιλήψιμο, αλλά, όταν υπονοείται ότι χάρη στον Mandelson μειώθηκαν οι κοινοτικοί δασμοί στο εισαγόμενο αλουμίνιο και ευνοήθηκε η εταιρεία του Deripaska, τότε το πράγμα αρχίζει να χοντραίνει. Ως πηγή των διαρροών αναφέρθηκε ο Osborne, πράγμα που εξόργισε τον Mandelson, αλλά και τον Rothschild, ο οποίος αντεπιτέθηκε κατηγορώντας τον πρώην συμφοιτητή του ότι εκείνο το «μοιραίο» Σαββατοκύριακο στην Κέρκυρα συζήτησε με τον Deripaska το ενδεχόμενο μιας δωρεάς του ολιγάρχη προς το Συντηρητικό Κόμμα, ύψους 50.000 στερλινών, παρ' όλο που απαγορεύεται σε ξένους πολίτες να χρηματοδοτούν βρετανικά πολιτικά κόμματα. Η δωρεά - που τελικά δεν έγινε - θα διοχετευόταν μέσω μιας βρετανικής εταιρείας συμφερόντων του Deripaska ώστε να είναι νομότυπη.

Χαμένοι από αυτή την ιστορία βγαίνουν και οι δύο πρωταγωνιστές της, αν και ο Mandelson είναι μαθημένος σε τέτοια. Για τον Osborne, όμως, που θεωρείται η ανερχόμενη δύναμη των Συντηρητικών, το πλήγμα στη δημόσια εικόνα του είναι μεγάλο, αφού η ιστορία τον εκθέτει στα μάτια της κοινής γνώμης προτού κάνει τα πρώτα του ουσιαστικά βήματα στον δημόσιο βίο.

Ελπίζω πως θα υπάρξει και συνέχεια.
